ABOUT US…

About the Seniors’ University Group

The mission of the Seniors' University Group (SUG) is to promote the value and availability of lifelong learning opportunities for older learners in the community in collaborative partnership with the University of Regina Lifelong Learning Centre at the College Avenue Campus. Those wishing to receive SUG rates for Lifelong Learning Centre courses must be current members of the SUG. The proceeds of The Big Book Sale support the cost of courses and activities offered at the Centre.

In 2017, the Seniors' University Group was proud to celebrate our 40-year partnership with the University of Regina to develop learning programs for older adults in Regina.

Book Sale Proceeds Finance New Student Lounge

Our Big Book Sale donors and buyers often ask how the proceeds of the sale are used. Here is the most recent example. On February 9, 2018, the Seniors’ University Group Board Members presented a cheque for $25,000 to Dr. Vianne Timmins, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Regina.

This donation is designated for space in the revitalized College Avenue Campus to be known as "The Seniors’ University Group Student Lounge". It will be open to all students taking courses through the Lifelong Learning Centre. It will provide much needed space for small meetings and socializing. The donation gives us naming rights for the lounge, appliances, furnishings, and maintenance for 15 years.

Since 2007, The Big Book Sale has been our major annual fundraiser. It has allowed us to contribute an average of $9,000 annually to the Lifelong Learning Centre for courses and social activities for older adults. Because of the growth of the sale in recent years, we use some of the proceeds to purchase the tables we need to display the increase in donations. Once the current phase of the revitalization project is complete, the SUG Board will consider other ways to contribute to the College Avenue Campus, a centre of educational excellence since 1911.

The sale represents thousands of volunteer hours by 100+ group members, their families and friends in support of their love of learning and community.
